The Dallas Cowboys were praised for their 2020 NFL Draft. It all began with former Oklahoma wide receiver CeeDee Lamb falling to them at the No. 17 spot.
In addition to running back Ezekiel Elliott and receivers Amari Cooper and Michael Gallup, Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott will have a multiple of weapons at his disposal in 2020. And Lamb will be wearing a familiar number to Dallas fans: No. 88.
Former Dallas receiver Dez Bryant, the last to don the jersey number, reacted to the news.
“I can’t feel no way but be supportive of lamb and the rest of these young stars that’s entering the league. I believe it’s my job to help them succeed as much on and off the field,” Bryant tweeted.
Former Dallas wide receiver Michael Irvin is perhaps the most notable Dallas Cowboy to wear the number, as he won three Super Bowls with the team and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2007. Another former receiver, Drew Pearson, wore the number as well. He won one Super Bowl and is regarded as one of the most notable Hall of Fame snubs right now. And of course, Bryant (2010-2017) wore the jersey number in his time with the franchise.
Additionally, team owner and general manger Jerry Jones said he had a teammate at Arkansas, Jerry Lamb, who wore that number. Jones said that he wanted CeeDee Lamb to wear No. 88 in his honor, according to Michael Gehlken, Cowboys reporter for the Dallas Morning News.
The Cowboys getting Lamb in the draft was shocking to most and even Lamb himself admitted that even he was shocked that he landed with the Dallas Cowboys in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft last week. Regarded as one of the top receivers on the board, Lamb was the third to go after the Raiders took Henry Ruggs III and the Broncos took Jerry Jeudy.
So when the Cowboys came up to pick at No. 17, it was a rather easy choice. They took Lamb to bolster the offense along with Cooper.
“(I'm) very surprised. Honestly, I couldn't see this coming but I'm glad it did,” Lamb said to 105.3 The Fan in Dallas. “I didn't really have much conversations with them. I met with them in February at the draft (combine). Other than that, there wasn't really much going on between us.”
Lamb is coming off a junior season in which he garnered consensus All-America honors after hauling in 62 receptions for 1,327 yards and 14 touchdowns and rushing for 20 yards and another score. He finished his Oklahoma career with 173 receptions for 3,292 yards and 32 touchdowns, marks that ranked third, second and sixth in program history, respectively. He declared for the NFL Draft on Dec. 29, just one day after the Sooners’ loss to LSU in the College Football Playoff semifinals.
He said that when Dallas picked up the phone on Thursday night and called him to say it would be taking him, it was none other than Jones who was on the other end of the phone call.
“It was Jerry Jones and I was just actually very, very, surprised,” Lamb told 105.3 The Fan. “I wasn't expecting it, but I'm definitely excited. I can't really put it into words but I'm definitely grateful for this opportunity. I can't thank Jerry Jones enough for bringing me into Dallas and I can't wait to get to work.”
