LPGA star Michelle Wie announced the birth of her first child on Instagram with photos of the happy parents and their little girl.
Wie and her husband, Golden State Warriors executive Jonnie West, welcomed Makenna Kamalei Yoona West to the world on Friday.
Wie, 30, wrote on Instagram:
“Kenna baby, I have waited my entire life to meet you. Makenna Kamalei Yoona West, your daddy and I love you more than any words can describe. You are our entire (world) we can’t wait to watch you grow. 6/19/20.”
Wie was born and raised in Honolulu and Kamalei is Hawaiian for “beloved child.”
Wie and West married in August and announced the pregnancy in January. The former U.S. Women’s Open champion last competed in June 2019 at the KPMG Women’s PGA and missed the cut. She tearfully told reporters she wasn’t “entirely sure how much more I have left in me” and later announced she would skip the rest of the LPGA season to get healthy.
She had hand surgery in October 2018 and dealt with a lengthy recovery leading into the KPMG Women’s PGA. She competed in only five events in 2019 and has never missed a season since turning professional in 2005.
Wie is considering returning for the U.S. Open, which was postponed from this month to Dec. 10-13 due to the COVID-19 crisis.
“Suddenly, it's something that seriously needs to be discussed,” Wie told ESPN in May of the dates falling in place.
If she competes will depend on her health and the safety of traveling with a 6-month-old when it comes time, she said. She’s a five-time winner on the LPGA Tour and shot the lowest score ever by a woman competing on the PGA Tour.
