With their first pick in the 2020 MLB Draft, the Yankees selected Austin Wells at 28th overall. Wells is a 6-foot-1, 200 pound catcher from the University of Arizona. MLB Pipeline ranked him no. 27 on their top 200 list, while Baseball America had him at no. 21 on their top 500 list.
The 20-year-old has done nothing but hit since arriving on campus for the University of Arizona, slashing .357/.476/.560 in 71 college games. He is a draft-eligible sophomore, whom the Yankees drafted in the 35th round last year.
Wells gets rave reviews for his bat. Baseball America says he “...has an outstanding approach at the plate with plus raw power, using a simple swing with good bat control. In both of his college seasons, he walked more than he struck out, impressive for any hitter but especially for a power hitter like Wells.”
The Yankees used their top two draft picks in 2018 on catchers. They currently have three catchers in their top-30 prospects, but all three were limited due to injuries last season. There are question if he will stick behind the plate, but Wells’ bat is his carrying tool. That will determine how fast he moves through the system. In fact, it has so much upside that the lefty-swinging Wells immediately has one of the highest offensive ceilings in the entire system.
The Yankees forfeited their second round pick when they signed Gerrit Cole this offseason, after he turned down a qualifying offer. Their next pick will be 99th overall in the third round.
