Pain. 2020 has brought a lot of pain for fans of Penn State football. On Wednesday evening the latest body blow was deliverd. This body blow came when James Franklin told reporters following practice on Wednesday night that running back Journey Brown will no longer be able to play football.
Shortly thereafter, Brown took to Twitter with a statement.
Prior to the start of the season, Franklin announced Brown would miss an unknown amount of time due to an undisclosed health condition. Brown has now been diagnosed with hyperthrophic cardiomyopathy, a heart condition which causes the heart muscle to become abnormally thick. Due to this condition, Brown’s football career is now over.
2019 was a breakout campaign for Brown as he rushed for 819 yards and 12 touchdowns. This included a Penn State bowl record 202 rushing yards and a pair of rushing touchdowns in the team’s Cotton Bowl victory over Memphis. This performance earned Brown Cotton Bowl Offensive MVP honors.
Entering the 2020 season Brown was in the conversation for being the best running back in the country. Penn State’s offense was going to be built around a run game led by him, and Brown was on his way to potentially being the first running back selected in April’s NFL Draft.
No pun intended, your heart has to break for Brown. The young man, who has been an excellent representation of Penn State both on and off the field, was on his way to making life changing money for he and his family. Now, football is no longer an option for him.
Hopefully, Brown will continue to find nothing but success in whatever comes next for him in life.
