As the Carson Wentz trade reports continue and the Philadelphia Eagles weigh their options, Jalen Hurts sits waiting in the wings. Or does he? According to Pro Football Focus’ latest mock draft, the Eagles are selecting a quarterback.
With the NFL Draft two-plus months away, the Eagles, who have the No. 6 overall pick, have a plethora of options, such as wide receiver, defensive back or even linebacker. However, PFF believes a trade up to No. 3 and a quarterback is the best bet.
According to their mock draft, the best move for Philadelphia is selecting Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields.
“With Carson Wentz likely on his way out of Philadelphia, the Eagles need to get aggressive at upgrading at the quarterback position in April's draft,” PFF wrote. “Rookie Jalen Hurts showed flashes of competence as the team’s starter, but he still finished the last four weeks of the season as one of the lowest-graded quarterbacks.
“Fields has his own fair share of concerns as a prospect, but he’s still the No. 3 overall player on PFF’s board and the first-ranked college quarterback in terms of PFF passing grade over the past two seasons (2019-20).”
Trevor Lawrence is the bonafide No. 1 overall pick while a lot of mocks have BYU’s Zach Wilson as the second quarterback rather than Fields. However, in Philadelphia’s situation, Fields suiting up in midnight green could be a logical fit due to the new regime with the Eagles. New head coach Nick Sirianni could have Wentz shipped out and might not be totally sold on Hurts.
Taking a chance with Fields and building around a brand new quarterback could signal a totally different and new direction for the franchise.
Why is Fields sliding though? NFL draft expert Todd McShay explained that on Wednesday’s edition of “Get Up.”
“If you go back and study games against Indiana, Northwestern and in the College Football Playoff, national championship game against Alabama, he completed about 52% of his throws with five interceptions in those games,” McShay said. “In my opinion, you look at him physically he’s big, he’s sturdy, he’s strong, he’s mobile, he’s got a big arm. He’s got all the traits that you look for. He likes to see his receivers come open and gets stuck on that first read very frequently.”
In 2020, Fields finished 158 of 225 passing (70.2% completion percentage) for 2,100 yards, 22 touchdowns, six interceptions, 383 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns in eight games. In 14 games in 2019, Fields finished 238 of 354 passing (67.2% completion percentage) for 3,273 yards, 41 touchdowns, three interceptions, 484 rushing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns.
“That's a great question,” Hurts said to Pete Prisco of CBS Sports during Super Bowl week answering who he thinks will start for the Eagles in 2021. “I’ll tell you I'm putting the work in my mind. Excited for the offseason and for the next step. Regardless of what's what, I'm trying to be the best quarterback I can. I'm trying to learn from my mistakes from last year and the four games I got my feet wet in and get ready for next year….It’s always been a business. In college and in the pros. I understand that. One thing that I do….try and keep the right mentality. Control what you can. I will always be that way. The one thing I can control is my work ethic and my attitude...just building as a man and as a player. I’ll always be rooted in my faith.
“I think simply leveling up one very part of my game. Building relationships with the coaches we have. I think that's always pivotal. I think we need to create an identity for what we want to be and how they want to go about it. I think that's a big point for me and it’ll help me as a player.”
As a rookie, Hurts finished 77 of 148 passing (52% completion percentage) for 1,061 yards, six touchdowns, four interceptions, 354 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns in four starts and 15 total games.
