The good news is, odds are that if the Texans make it to the Super Bowl this season, their opponents would be the New Orleans Saints.
I could think of only one better championship opponent for the Texans: America’s Team.
The bad news is, that matchup is only the 60th-most likely to be played in next year’s big game, according to exact matchup odds posted by BetOnline.ag.
No need for you to get into statistical analysis about how big of a slight that is. It’s huge.
It is OK for the defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs, and the Ravens, who went 14-2 last season, to appear on such a list ahead of the Texans. The Tom Brady-less Patriots are also acceptable, as long as Bill Belichick is still there.
But how could the Bills, Colts, Steelers, Browns, Raiders, Titans and Chargers all be considered better Super Bowl bets than the Texans?
Depending on where you look for futures bets, even the Broncos (40/1) have a better chance of making it to the Super Bowl from the AFC than the Texans (50/1).
While the NFC is the weaker conference, that the Cardinals, who went 5-10-1 last season, are an equal bet at 50/1 is quite surprising.
It is stunning that the Texans, whose over/under win total is only eight, are getting such little respect from the gambling experts.
Last year’s 8½ was bad enough, and an easy cover for you who followed my advice.
Be as disappointed as you’d like about Bill O’Brien getting the worse end of the DeAndre Hopkins trade, but don’t let that mislead you as to what the Texans are capable of this season.
It is hard to imagine the Texans leading the eventual Super Bowl champions by 24 points in the playoffs one year and fall out of the playoffs completely the next.
Is Deshaun Watson still on the team?
Well, the Texans will make the playoffs, likely win their division and can beat any team in the playoffs. (Or lose to any team in the playoffs, but that’s a different column.)
And they are certainly more likely to make a Super Bowl run that the Bills, Colts, Raiders, Chargers, Browns and Broncos.
The Chiefs are understandable favorites, and while I expect the Ravens and Patriots to come back to the pack, they deserve the hype.
Otherwise, the Texans are at least as talented as fringe AFC contenders the Titans, Steelers and Bills.
If you’re crazy enough to bet on a Super Bowl run, the Texans could be a lucrative longshot.
