Bills quarterback Jake Fromm has issued an apology after a text message of his was leaked to Twitter on Thursday. In the text, Fromm mentions that "only elite white people" should be able to get guns.
The private text messages were shared by a public Twitter account just after midnight on June 4. In the text message, Fromm says that "guns are good" in one message, which was followed by another message that said, "Just make them very expensive so only elite white people can get them haha."
In his apology, Fromm said that he has met with his Bills teammates and that he's hoping everyone can forgive him.
"I am extremely sorry that I chose to use the words 'elite white people' in a text message conversation," Fromm wrote in his statement. "Although I never meant to imply that I am an 'elite white person,' as stated later in the conversation, there's no excuse for that word choice and sentiment. While it was poor, my heart is not. Now, more than ever, is the time for support and togetherness and I stand against racism 100%. I promise to commit myself to being a part of the solution in this country. I addressed my teammates and coaches in a team meeting today and I hope they see this incident is not representative of the person I am. Again, I'm truly sorry for my words and actions and humbly ask for forgiveness."
Although the texts were released to Twitter early Thursday, Fromm actually sent them more than a year ago while he was a student at UGA. The date on the text message is listed as March 16, 2019. The person who leaked the text messages on Twitter was apparently asked to delete the tweets, but as of 3:15 p.m. ET on Thursday, they were still up.
Fromm has only been with the Bills since April, when he was selected during the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. In the aftermath of these texts coming to light, the organization has released the following statement:
"Earlier today, we became aware of comments made in a text message conversation involving Jake Fromm in 2019. He was wrong and he admitted it to us. We don't condone what he said. Jake was honest and forthcoming to us about the text exchange. He asked for an opportunity to address and apologize to his teammates and coaches today in a team meeting, which he did. We will continue to work with Jake on the responsibilities of being a Buffalo Bill on and off the field."
The rookie quarterback isn't the only one in the NFL who's gotten themselves into hot water this week over his comments. Drew Brees has been under fire for the past 24 hours for giving his thoughts on how he feels about players kneeling during national anthem. The Saints quarterback has since apologized, but not before multiple teammates and athletes around the country called him out for his remarks. Broncos coach Vic Fangio also issued an apology this week after saying that he doesn't think there's any racism in the NFL.
