Apple has accepted MacBook trade-ins for years, but only by mail. The company has finally lifted this restriction, and customers in the U.S. and Canada can hand over their old MacBooks at their local Apple Stores in exchange for credit that can be used immediately towards a new purchase (or applied to an Apple Store gift card).
And if your MacBook is too old to be worth anything, Apple will safely and responsibly recycle it for you.
In-person MacBook trade-ins are only available at a few Apple Store locations for now, but will be rolling out to more soon. Even if every Apple Store was already participating, though, many of them are temporarily closed or offering limited services due to COVID-19.
If you’re looking to trade in your MacBook, make sure you look up which local stores are open with Apple’s online store finder and call to confirm they’re taking trade-ins. You’ll also want to brush up on what to expect when you head to an Apple Store for the foreseeable future.
If your store isn’t accepting in-person trade-ins, you can still send in your MacBook or other Apple devices through Apple’s online trade-in program. The online guide will walk you through the entire process, and Apple will provide you with all the necessary prepaid shipping labels you’ll need to send off your used products.
How to get your MacBook ready for trade-in
There are a few things you need to do before trading in your MacBook in-store. Most of these steps are optional, but highly recommended.
- Check the estimated trade-in value. This isn’t required, but it’s nice to know what sort of credit you can expect before trading in your laptop. You can check what your MacBook model is worth under the “MacBook” tab on Apple’s online trade-in program page. Apple’s listed trade-in values are normally accurate, but there’s always a chance the estimates won’t match the actual credit you receive.
- Back up important files. You’re about to ditch your MacBook, so you’ll need to save any important files you want to save or port over to your next device. You can do this with iCloud or other cloud drive services or use an external USB drive.
- Protect your data. Once your personal data is backed up in another location, you’ll want to turn off these settings to make sure your personal information is unlinked and removed from the device. Alternatively, you can permanently wipe your data and personal information by formatting the hard drive.
