The Red Sox used their first selection of the draft on Nick Yorke, a very surprising pick that came way down the draft rankings. They certainly like Yorke as a player and we shouldn’t discount that fact, but the other motivation for that selection was to save some money with an under slot deal that is reportedly coming and use it for better talent later in the draft. It sure seems like they did that with their third rounder here, as they took Blaze Jordan, a high schooler from DeSoto Central High School in Mississippi who was announced as a third baseman.
As always, we’ll have some deeper analysis on this pick and all of the others that get selected today, but we can provide a little bit of background information here. Firstly, Jordan was ranked 90th on Baseball America’s top 500, 115th on FanGraphs’s list and 42nd on MLB Pipeline’s list.
The big selling point for Jordan is the power, as he is one of the most famous players in this class due to some YouTube videos that showed off said power. He is also one of the youngest players in this class as he reclassified to make himself available for this draft rather than next year. His 18th birthday is not until December. Beyond the power, he has potential for an average hit tool as well, though unsurprisingly for a 17-year-old with power some work is needed there. Defensively, he was announced as a third baseman but most scouts agree that he will ultimately end up as a first baseman.
Like I said, we’ll have more tomorrow, but the quick summation is that the Red Sox got some exciting upside here at the plate with one of the best hitters in the draft in terms of raw power. Expect him to sign for more than the $667,900 slot value for this selection. Jordan has a commitment to Mississippi State for next year.
