The Celtics won Game 1 against the 76ers, but they suffered a big blow during the contest as they lost forward Gordon Hayward for several weeks due to an ankle sprain. As a result of the loss, Brad Stevens was forced to alter his rotation for Game 2, sliding Marcus Smart into a starting spot. To counter that move, Brett Brown started rookie Matisse Thybulle instead of veteran forward Al Horford.
Through the first three quarters of Game 2, the Celtics took a commanding 98-75 lead and looked solid without Hayward. The Sixers didn't have an answer for Jayson Tatum early on in Game 2. The All-Star forward paced the Celtics with 25 points and five rebounds through 36 minutes of action. As for the Sixers, Joel Embiid had himself a big night again. The All-Star center tallied 30 points and nine boards through the first three quarters.
