Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo's uncertain future with the San Francisco 49ers has morphed from local news story into national sports media fodder.
On Monday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Garoppolo is expected to miss six weeks after aggravating his high-ankle sprain. NFL Network's Mike Garafolo has since confirmed a similar timeline, though he added that surgery appears to be off the table for now. Unless the 49ers are firmly in the hunt for a playoff spot in six weeks — possible but very unlikely in the top-heavy NFC West — Jimmy G's season may very well be done.
And thus, Fox Sports talking head Colin Cowherd, who likes to speak definitively about literally everything, said on Tuesday that "it's over" for Garoppolo and the 49ers.
"There are three things as a quarterback that will end your career for one team," he said. "You're inconsistent — Garoppolo is; the coach has lost faith in you — the coach has; and you can't stay healthy."
Cowherd added that Garoppolo's NFL career isn't over, which probably did not need clarifying, but his San Francisco tenure is finished. He thinks Jimmy G will reunite with Bill Belichick in New England next year, and San Francisco will be in the market for Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan as well as New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold.
It is not so crazy to wonder aloud whether the Niners will go in a different direction this offseason, especially since Garoppolo's massive contract isn't guaranteed. But proclaiming this the official end of the road after eight regular season games is of course silly, and the reasons Cowherd gave are suspect at best.
Garoppolo has been inconsistent in 2020 while battling injuries, but was much less so last year. There's no evidence that coach Kyle Shanahan has lost faith in him either; yanking your injured quarterback in a blowout is hardly proof of that.
It is true that Garoppolo can't stay healthy, though — and that, more than anything else, will dictate whether he gets the starting nod again in 2021.
