The New York Mets have made a roster move on Wednesday, as they filled the vacated spot on their 40-man roster by claiming catcher Deivy Grullon off of waivers. The Tampa Bay Rays DFA’d Grullon last week.
New York opened a spot on their 40-man roster when they placed Dellin Betances on the 60-day injured list last week.
Now Grullon takes that spot on the 40-man roster, giving the Mets some much-needed depth at catcher. Patrick Mazieka was previously the only other catcher on the 40-man roster outside of James McCann and Tomas Nido.
The 5-foot-11, 240 pound catcher has only played five games at the big league level, making his debut with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2019, playing four games and collecting one hit in nine at-bats. Last year, Grullon made a cameo with the Boston Red Sox, appearing in just one game.
The Dominican native was signed by the Phillies as an international free agent back in 2012. He would spend seven seasons in the Phillies farm system and was ranked as their No. 16 prospect by Baseball America in 2020. Across 606 games in the minor leagues, Grullon has hit .253/.305/.405, with 70 home runs and a .710 OPS.
In 2019, Grullon played 108 games in Triple-A with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs and had great success, hitting .283/.354/.496, with 21 home runs, 24 doubles and 77 RBI.
The 25-year-old backstop has two options remaining and will likely be sent to the Mets alternate site in case they need some reinforcements behind the plate at some point this season.
