We’re in the midst of the dog days of the NBA offseason, and that means endless speculation up until opening tip. The Los Angeles Lakers, as they are wont to do, have become the biggest topic of discussion thanks to their latest additions in LeBron James’ latest quest for a title.
His former teammates, however, aren’t exactly the most bullish on the Lakers’ chances. Kendrick Perkins, a known believer in LeBron’s chances this season, recently joined Channing Frye and Richard Jefferson on their Road Trippin’. All three players were on the Cleveland Cavaliers teams that made the NBA Finals, but clearly they have contrasting views.
Frye responded (41:40 mark) to Perkins’ previous take on the Lakers being the hands-down favorites for the title this year. Safe to say he doesn’t agree.
“I was listening to you. I don’t agree with you. I love Bron. I love AD. I like Melo. I like Russell Westbrook. It is 2021. There’s not enough balls to go around. … In the playoffs, it’s a big ‘what-if’. This old a– team has to make it 82 games to the playoffs.”
Both Perkins and Jefferson contested Frye’s take, which is a stance many Lakers doubters have held since the Russell Westbrook trade. Frye’s biggest criticism on LA hinged on doubting their ability to stave off injury. But assuming health for all teams, suddenly it was Jefferson, not Frye, who took a shot at LeBron James’ squad.
Jefferson: “Let’s assume health for every team.”
Frye: “Oh, healthy for every team? This team wins a championship.”
Jefferson: “Well, they’re not better than Brooklyn. Yeah, we’ll argue that point. They’re not better than Brooklyn.”
Sounds like the Lakers just can’t win, as far as LeBron’s ex-teammates are concerned. It was only Kendrick Perkins who remained steadfast in his belief. Wonder what LeBron James thinks about this? The NBA season can’t come soon enough.
