Scott Frost heads back to the drawing board after his fourth season at Nebraska began on a sour note at Illinois in Saturday's opener. Nebraska's tenure-long struggles for Frost continued as multiple mistakes led to a multi-touchdown deficit during a 30-22 loss.
The Huskers trailed 30-9 late in the third quarter before scoring the game's final 13 points and running out of gas in the final minute.
Miscues early doomed the Huskers, who caught a punt at their own 1-yard line leading to a safety and gave up a defensive touchdown late in the second quarter after Adrian Martinez was stripped on a sack. It was Martinez's 36th career turnover and one that seemed to deflate Nebraska's shot at spoiling Bret Bielema's coaching debut with the Illini.
Prior to Illinois opening things up a bit in the third quarter before Nebraska's near rally in the final moment, the Fighting Illini's only scoring drive of the opening half came after a third-down interception was negated after two penalties on the Huskers led to 30 yards the other way. Illinois cashed in a few plays later.
Frost, who promised this would be his best team with the Huskers since his arrival, is now 12-21 at Nebraska after one of the more disappointing losses of his tenure.
Here's some of the reaction after Nebraska's deflating effort during an important game for Frost:
