The 2020 MLB season is set to begin later this week under the shadow of the coronavirus pandemic.

The pandemic, which led to the delay and shortening of the season, will keep fans out of the stands and will be a constant worry throughout the 60-game campaign.

Safety protocols are in place — including face mask requirements in clubhouses for all, and coaches and managers being required to wear them in dugouts.

Some players are going above and beyond.

Multiple players, including Yankees outfielder Clint Frazier and Phillies shortstop Didi Gregorius, have said they plan to wear a face mask on the field — which is optional — during the season.

“I am definitely wearing it in games because I think it adds safety for everybody, for me and people around me,” Gregorius said before an intrasquad game at Citizens Bank Park last week, per NBC Sports Philadelphia. “So I think wearing it will be normal for me.”

Frazier hopes to set an example.

“I want to make sure that I’m not the reason why it spreads to anybody and that I can play if it does get spread to someone else,” Frazier said. “If there is somebody out there that sees me wearing a mask, maybe they’ll do it as well ... It doesn’t bother me at all. At first it was a little weird, but I feel like it’s just something that became second nature at this point.”

Fans who want to follow Frazier’s example can get MLB-themed face masks at Fanatics, Kohl’s, MLB Shop and FOCO. Other face mask options include athletic face masks from Under Armour, Adidas and Reebok, as well as non-branded face masks at Amazon, Macy’s and many more outlets here.

Other players who have said they plan to wear a mask during the regular season include Frazier’s teammate Kyle Higashioka, Houston Astros infielder Aledmys Diaz and Texas Rangers catcher Robinson Chirinos.

There are player who have not explicitly said they’ll wear a mask during the season, but were seen wearing one during intrasquad scrimmages or preseason tune-ups over the weekend. That list includes Washington Nationals infielders Wilmer Difo and Raudy Read, Seattle Mariners third baseman Patrick Wisdom and Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Orlando Arcia.

The 2020 MLB regular season begins on Thursday, when the Yankees face the defending World Series champion Washington Nationals at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C.
