DID YOU MISS BASEBALL? DO YOU FEEL BETTER NOW?!
Thanks to a fantastic debut, Jon Lester departed the game with a 7-0 lead before the bottom of the 6th inning began, and yet somehow the tying run got to third base for the Reds by the time the 9th inning arrived.
He wasn’t as stretched out as he will be in a few weeks, so 76 pitches was his limit. He used them well, allowing no hits, one walk, and two guys got on via errors. The Reds couldn’t make any kind of decent contact off of him for his five innings of work.
But, yeah. The bullpen. Dan Winkler was wild. Duane Underwood gave up another dong. Ryan Tepera has a nasty slider, but he also allowed two baserunners. James Norwood was unimpressive again. Craig Kimbrel was an absolute disaster and stayed in far longer than he should have. Thank goodness Jeremy Jeffress was able to finish things off. More on that tomorrow.
Offensively, the Cubs were all over Wade Miley, who had nothing. But once he was out before the 2nd inning was over, the Cubs didn’t add much on. I mean, you wouldn’t think eight runs would’ve made for a tight game, but this offense is just gonna have to keep adding on and on and on until the bullpen is settled. If it ever is.
I’m not quite sure why Kris Bryant was removed later in the game – didn’t hear on the broadcast if they said – but Nico Hoerner got his first taste of big league left field. Relatedly, I’m not sure why Jason Heyward wasn’t inserted late for defense (he probably makes a catch that Souza could not, which led to a couple runs).
