When it comes to postseason baseball, every roster decision is more meaningful. Managers need to find a delicate balance with preserving pitchers, so you’d hope that MLB wouldn’t completely take those decisions away from the managers by messing up something like a rain delay.

But that’s essentially what happened during Wednesday’s Game 2 AL Wild Card matchup between the Yankees and Indians.

The start time for the game was delayed due to inclement weather in the area (it wasn’t actually raining yet), but after about an hour delay, the league gave the teams the go-ahead to start. The Indians started Carlos Carrasco who pitched a 1-2-3 inning. And Cleveland managed to score one run off Masahiro Tanaka before it actually started raining in the first …

The game had to be delayed for the second time in 90 minutes, which made the decision to start at all look beyond questionable. A stoppage like that could leave both teams without their scheduled starting pitchers. And there was no reason for that when you’re supposed to have experts manage these scenarios and decisions.

After 20 minutes, the tarp eventually came off the field again. Tanaka would also stay in the game. But MLB fans were not pleased with the decision-making process at all.

Do better, MLB. It’s the postseason.
