The Milwaukee Brewers have made the postseason for the third consecutive year.
The Brew Crew failed to get things done against the St. Louis Cardinals today, losing their final game of the regular season to finish 29-31. But they got the help that they needed, with the Giants losing to San Diego 5-4 and the Phillies falling to Tampa Bay 5-0. That chain of events allowed the Brewers to back into the expanded postseason as the #8 seed.
This marks the first time in franchise history that the Brewers have made the playoffs for three years in a row. This is the seventh postseason berth in franchise history. Milwaukee becomes the second team in baseball history to make the playoffs with a losing record, joining the Kansas City Royals of the strike-shortened 1981 season. The Royals finished 50-53 that year, but went 30-23 post-strike to make the playoffs.
Our Milwaukee Nine will now face the top-seeded Los Angeles Dodgers in the Wild Card round of the playoffs. The best-of-three series begins on Wednesday, 30 September, with game two on 1 October and game three on 2 October if necessary. The Dodgers finished with a 43-17 regular season record, their .717 winning percentage ranking as the best in all of baseball.
