CLEVELAND, Ohio — How’s this for fate: Indians slugger José Ramírez used a Rajai Davis-model bat when he launched his walk-off home run Tuesday to beat the White Sox and propel Cleveland into the postseason with a 5-3 win at Progressive Field.
Hawk-eyed fans noticed on video replay that Ramírez was clutching a Davis model MF19 Custom Cut LDM Marucci bat under his arm between pitches as he adjusted his batting gloves before blasting a Jose Ruiz pitch into the seats in right center.
It’s no coincidence that Ramírez belted his 12th home run in the last 24 games using the same model bat that Davis used when he tied Game 7 of the 2016 World Series against the Chicago Cubs with a dramatic home run against Aroldis Chapman. That home run was voted the No. 1 moment in Progressive Field history in a survey of Indians fans commemorating the park’s 25th anniversary last year.
It’s also not the first time Ramírez has used a Davis bat. Since about mid-2018 Indians players have been using Davis bats on occasion because they like the feel and balance of the lumber. Equipment manager Tony Amato confirmed that the club purchased a bunch of Davis-model bats a few years ago, but that the team’s supply is running low in the back room.
Chances are pretty good that Ramírez might insist on re-stocking this particular model as he is on an unprecedented hot streak. Ramírez is hitting .362 (33-for-91) with 12 home runs, 26 RBI and 22 runs over his last 24 games. Last night he extended his hitting streak to seven games and is hitting .500 (14-for-28) with 6 HR and 16 RBI over that stretch while also tied for the third-most home runs in baseball.
