The New England Patriots have officially declared only one player out for their Week 2 game against the Seattle Seahawks — rookie linebacker Josh Uche, who is dealing with an ankle injury — but it seems as if they are preparing for another absence: with Adam Butler listed as questionable for the upcoming contest because of a shoulder issue, New England has elevated fellow defensive tackle Nick Thurman from its practice squad.
While it remains to be seen if Butler will be active against the Seahawks, or how big his eventual role might be if deemed ready to go, elevating Thurman gives the Patriots an additional layer of depth at the position. He now joins not just Butler on the active roster but veteran Lawrence Guy and second-year man Byron Cowart as well.
Thurman originally arrived in New England last spring after stints with the Houston Texans, the San Antonio Commanders of the now-defunct AAF, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. While the former undrafted free agent failed to make the 53-man team last summer, the Patriots’ coaching staff apparently saw enough potential in the then-second-year man to bring him back via their practice squad and give him another shot this year.
While Thurman again was not able to survive roster cutdown day, he once more re-signed with New England through its developmental roster. Not just that, but the 25-year-old appears to be seen as game-ready by the club after he had not appeared in a regular season or playoff contest over his first two years in the NFL. Against Seattle, he might very well get his first shot.
Given that he was promoted as part of the league’s new standard elevation protocol, Thurman will revert to the practice squad again after Sunday’s game. He can be brought up again this way for one additional time throughout the rest of the season.
