Week 2 was everyone’s least favorite week of NFL football in a very long time. It had nothing to do with the standard of football; generally, it was very good. Instead, it was the season-destroying injuries that too many teams experienced over the weekend’s games. Just like in these rankings, those injuries will certainly change the season outcomes for many teams.
This week’s voters were Matt Lane, Pete Sweeney, Ron Kopp and myself.
1. Kansas City Chiefs (1st)
When you’re on a winning streak that dates all the way back to the middle of November, you’re going to have to grind out the odd victory. As we’ve said before, this team stays No. 1 until someone beats them.
2. Baltimore Ravens (2nd)
They’ve looked completely dominant so far this season. Don’t be surprised to see them occupying the above spot next week.
3. Seattle Seahawks (4th)
Won a thriller on Sunday Night Football. We’re going to run out of superlatives for Russell Wilson soon.
4. Green Bay Packers (7th)
They might not end up winning as many games as the 2019 team, but this Packers team is so much more fun to watch. The Aaron Rodgers Revenge Tour is real.
5. New England Patriots (8th)
Any doubt that the Patriots could compete this year is surely gone after this week’s performance. How it took so long for Cam Newton to be picked up, I do not know.
6. New Orleans Saints (3rd)
It looked like plain-sailing for the Saints in the early stages of Monday Night Football, but the offense soon fell apart against a Raiders team no one particularly fears. That has to be worrying for Saints fans.
7. Los Angeles Rams (14th) | This week’s high riser
They’ve jumped from 20th to seventh in just two weeks. An outstanding start to the season for a team very few fancied.
8. Tennessee Titans (11th)
That’s now two weeks on the trot (in a row) that the Titans have let inferior opponents hang around in games. Still, no complaints at two Ws.
9. Buffalo Bills (6th)
Josh Allen for MVP 2020 is a thing.
10. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (10h)
Brady looked much better this week — but we’ll take it with a pinch of salt because it was against the Panthers.
11. Arizona Cardinals (13th)
Kyler Murray is looking to make it back-to-back-to-back 100/1 shots to win MVP.
12. Dallas Cowboys (12th)
I don’t want to go overboard about the comeback because of well... you know... the Falcons. Kudos for putting it altogether late — and for keeping the dream alive: that onside kicks can be recovered.
13. San Francisco 49ers (5th) | This week’s big faller
Jordan Reed went out and proved what we were all thinking: George Kittle is a system tight end. Just kidding. The team’s performance was fine. It’s the injuries that have caused this slide.
14. Pittsburgh Steelers (9th)
Given their opponent’s injury woes, they should have beaten the Broncos comfortably.
15. Las Vegas Raiders (21st)
A big climb up the rankings after getting the shock win on Monday Night Football. Their stadium looks incredible.
16. Indianapolis Colts (20th)
A bit of a bounce back after a poor Week 1 loss. The defense smothered the Vikings offense.
17. Houston Texans (17th)
It’s really hard to judge the Texans yet because of the teams they have played. Yet it must be said that they look a long way off from being in the AFC’s big two.
18. Philadelphia Eagles (15th)
Beaten comfortably by the Rams. Still plenty of time for them to turn their season around — especially in a division as bad as theirs.
19. Los Angeles Chargers (22nd)
How high would they have climbed had they got the win against Kansas City? The performance was impressive enough — but at the end, the true Chargers DNA showed.
20. Cleveland Browns (24th)
Baker and the Browns played well on Thursday night. The question is, how many times will they play well this season?
21. Chicago Bears (19th)
Unlucky to be falling this week. It’s probably down to the level of their opponents.
22. Jacksonville Jaguars (26th)
They’ve made me excited for Jaguars vs. Dolphins on Thursday. That says a lot!
23. Minnesota Vikings (16th)
Kirk Cousins completed 11 of 26 passes for 113 yards and 3 interceptions. Grim.
24. Denver Broncos (18th)
A season that was so full of promise now looks like impending disaster. Signing Blake Bortles will not make their fans feel any better.
25. Atlanta Falcons (23rd)
Imagine being a Falcons fan. I did it for a minute or so — but then, I felt the sudden urge to cry.
26. Cincinnati Bengals (29th)
A.J. Green stated that he could play at an MVP level for four more years. The Bengals would appreciate it if he could offer four more quarters. Joe Burrow is legit.
27. Washington Football Team (25th)
Fell to a really exciting Cardinals team. No shame in that.
28. Detroit Lions (27th)
Matt Patricia is now 9-24-1 as the head coach of the Lions.
29. Miami Dolphins (30th)
Ran the Bills much closer than many expected. Will be kicking themselves that they didn’t pull off the upset.
30. Carolina Panthers (28th)
With Christian McCaffrey out for 4-6 weeks, Panthers games will be a real tough watch.
31. New York Giants (31st)
The Battle of New Jersey has begun. Who will have the No. 1 pick in 2021?
32. New York Jets (32nd)
Adam Gase should have been fired the moment the 49ers converted a 3rd-and-31 with a running play.
