Report: Texas to consider Cristobal, Franklin if no Urban Meyer - 247Sports

Ever since Texas’ collapse last week at home to Iowa State, Tom Herman has been under the microscope. The Longhorns are virtually eliminated from Big 12 title contention, and talk around the program making a change at head coach is heating up by the day.

It goes without saying that Urban Meyer is Texas’ top choice. However, should Meyer choose not to leave his job as an analyst at FOX, who could Texas go to should it still decide to make a change? According to CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd, Penn State’s James Franklin and Oregon’s Mario Cristobal would be next in line.

Franklin was mentioned as a name at USC plenty of times last season when the speculation around Clay Helton’s job security grew. He’s turned Penn State into one of the best programs in the sport, going 57-28 overall and 35-23 in the Big Ten since his arrival in 2014. The Nittany Lions have not been good this season, but Franklin led three double-digit wins in four seasons from 2016-19, with the lone outlier being a nine-win campaign in 2018.

As for Cristobal, he is 23-8 and 16-6 in the Pac-12 since taking over the full-time position at Oregon in 2018. Last season, he led the Ducks to a 12-2 record that included a Pac-12 championship and a Rose Bowl win over Wisconsin.

Speaking on Late Kick Sunday night, 247Sports’ Josh Pate outlined the reasons why Herman peaked at Texas and why the Longhorns must throw any amount of money.

“Is there any internal at Texas in terms of lack of resources or institutionally…” Pate said. “I don’t think there's a problem there. The head coach Tom Herman has everything and then some to succeed. He hasn't gotten it done. I told you after the Oklahoma game, I was convinced that was it. If you need the results on the field, that was it. I still believe that now. They won at Oklahoma State, didn't really care. Iowa State, whether they won or lost Saturday, I didn't really care. A lot of you needed to see that loss. Now you've seen it. Texas isn't close, Texas is not getting any closer. I don't think under the current regime they are going to get any closer. You see your quarterback recruiting? You see a mass exodus of in state talent. I can make the argument, they're as close as they’ll ever be. I am a proponent of making a move out there.

“You only make a move if you have a definitive better option already on the table, knowing you have a verbal agreement from. Do they have that? I believe they will have that. Big money will certainly be backing that. Remember it's very important...this was not a Chris Del Conte hire. Tom Herman was not his hire. That is pretty widely known. When they won the Sugar Bowl….Texas got fleeced by Herman's agent….After the Sugar Bowl, Herman and his representation wanted an extension. There's no reason to extend him, he's not going anywhere and yet they extended him just because when you print money, it's not a big deal.

“Chris Del Conte was not on board with that at the time….so I believe all the factors are in play here. Urban Meyer is the number one candidate by ten miles. You ask and ask and ask until he can't say no to you. You make it happen. You do exactly what Alabama did with Nick Saban. Urban Meyer needs to be the coach at Texas.”
