Aaron Rodgers raised plenty of eyebrows Sunday when he spoke of his “uncertain” future with the Packers.
But Brett Favre, someone who has been in Rodgers’ cleats, was not among those getting facial exercises after listening to the quarterback’s comments.
“I wouldn’t pay much attention to what he said,” Favre said Monday on SiriusXM NFL Radio. “I’ve been there. It hurts, it’s painful. The last thing you want to do is think about next year because you just had a major disappointment. That’s what you’re hearing in that soundbite.”
After the Packers fell to the Buccaneers, 31-26, in the NFC Championship, Rodgers seemed to cloud his future despite having three years remaining on a four-year, $134 million contract.
“A lot of guys’ futures [are] uncertain, myself included,” Rodgers said. “There’s a lot of unknowns going into this offseason now. I’m going to have to take some time away, for sure, and clear my head and just kind of see what’s going on with everything.”
But Favre, whose tenure with the Packers ended in 2008 when he was replaced by Rodgers, attributed the comments to “frustration, disappointment, hurt [and] pain.” While Favre’s final game in a Packers uniform came in an NFC Championship Game loss to the Giants in 2008, at the age of 38, he believes the 37-year-old Rodgers still has a future in Green Bay.
“Look, there’s no way the Packers would do anything to jeopardize losing Aaron — unless Aaron just chooses to retire, which I would be shocked,” said Favre, who was traded to the Jets and then moved on to the Vikings after one season. “The guy’s playing better now than he’s ever played. Without him, you certainly wouldn’t have been even close to where you were [Sunday]. I think the same will go for next year, and really, the next few years if he chooses to play.”
The Packers did draft quarterback Jordan Love with their first-round pick last April, which led to questions about how much longer Rodgers would play in Green Bay. But as long as Rodgers continues to chase a second Super Bowl ring, Favre thinks he can do it with the Packers.
“Why wouldn’t you think they’d be in the same position next year?” Favre said. “There’s no reason to think that, unless they don’t play up to their capabilities. There’s no reason to think Aaron would not play the same way he played this year, because he tends to do it year in, year out. I think for the Packers, more so with them, you would be foolish to make any move other than bringing him back and going as long as he wants to go.”
