What Acuña's diagnosis means for the Braves
David O'Brien, Braves beat writer: The diagnosis of Acuña's injury came as welcome relief for the Braves, who had feared their dynamic leadoff hitter might be out a while. Acuña is arguably the player they can least afford to lose. Now it appears he will avoid a stint on the 10-day IL and could return as soon as a Tuesday-Wednesday series against the Yankees. But the Braves might opt to keep him out of those two games, with an off day Thursday that would give him four days of rest before a homestand that starts Friday.
Where did this come from for Hendricks?
Sahadev Sharma, Cubs beat writer: After two positive COVID-19 tests on their coaching staff, the Cubs have been extra cautious with players who display any symptoms. With that in mind, Hendricks was scratched from his scheduled start on Tuesday with what team president Jed Hoyer described as congestion and fatigue.
That time off was likely a large factor in Hendricks' first inning on Sunday. He also has occasional bouts with mechanical issues and with a fastball that sits sub-90s, any slight problem impacting his normally pristine command gives him little margin for error.
Is Sunday's homer show a sign of Braves' offensive potential?
O'Brien: The slow-starting Braves waited more than two weeks for an offensive outburst like this. After the Cubs hit six homers in Saturday's 13-4 rout of the Braves, Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said his team was fully capable of a similar breakout.
One surprising aspect of their four first-inning homers was that Acuña Jr., the MLB home run leader entering Saturday, didn't hit one of them. The Braves had the second-most homers in the majors last season, and returned every power hitter from that team except for Adam Duvall.
