What the Texans' upset of Chargers means for Davis Mills' future as starting QB - The Athletic

The drive looked doomed.

First, there was an illegal formation penalty, then a timeout to avoid a delay of game, and finally a false start by tight end Pharaoh Brown right after that timeout, an ugly mistake that made it second-and-14 from the Houston 2. After intercepting a pass just outside their own end zone, the Texans appeared on their way to punting the ball right back to the Chargers to end the second quarter.

So often this season, the Texans’ limited offense has been unable to complement a defense that ranks near the top of the league in takeaways. But this time proved to be different.

This time, the Texans caught a break, then quarterback Davis Mills made some of his own luck, carrying a team that has often seemed to scheme up plays to minimize how much the rookie has had to do.

A holding penalty on the Chargers gave the Texans a first down, and a play later Mills threw 36 yards down the right sideline to Phillip Dorsett. It was one of Mills’ best throws of his rookie year, yet not even his best throw of this drive. Not after he tossed a 41-yard touchdown to Chris Conley just four snaps later.

Conley was supposed to stretch the defense and create space for an underneath route on the play, but Mills saw the safety on the right side of the field roll down to cover that route, so he decided to give Conley a chance to make a play.
