Sixteen clubs — including the first- and second-place finishers in every division — will make the 2020 playoffs, up from 10 under the current system. The Players Association and the owners struck a deal Thursday just hours before the first regular-season game of 2020, adding another wrinkle to an already bizarre season that is to be played mostly, if not entirely, without fans.
The deal between the league and the union covers only this year and is to pay the players a $50 million bonus pool. For all the benefits of novelty and change, money was a driving factor for both sides in a season where revenues are taking a massive hit. The owners are to receive increased dollars from their media partners for the expanded postseason — TBS and ESPN will carry the new games — and the players were actually not otherwise guaranteed any...
