DETROIT -- Former Detroit Tigers pitcher David Price became the most prominent MLB player to opt out of the 2020 season, announcing Saturday that he would decline to play because “it is in the best interest of my health and my family's health."

Price, who was traded from the Boston Red Sox to the Los Angeles Dodgers in a blockbuster deal that also included Mookie Betts, will forfeit about $11.5 million in salary. He remains under contract with the Dodgers through the 2022 season.

“I will miss my teammates and will be cheering for them throughout the season and on to a World Series victory,” Price said in a Twitter post. “I’m sorry I won’t be playing for you this year, but look forward to representing you next year.”

Price, 34, pitched for the Tigers in 2014 and 2015.

Rockies veteran Ian Desmond, Washington Nationals pitcher Joe Ross and his brother, former Tigers pitcher Tyson Ross, are among the other players who have opted out of the 2020 season.
