Brooks Koepka wanted to “spank” Bryson DeChambeau in The Match. He succeeded.
Koepka bested DeChambeau at “The Match” at the Wynn golf course in Las Vegas in a one-sided affair on Friday. It was supposed to be a 12-hole match, but Koepka was four holes up after nine, making it unnecessary to play the final three.
“It’s kind of like my major right now,” Koepka said. “I’m not going to lie. I just wanted to spank him.”
In his most recent PGA Tour events, Koepka has missed the cut two straight times. He has not finished better than 38th place in a tournament this season.
“Where is this on the PGA TOUR?” DeChambeau asked rhetorically, mid-Match.
The golfers have publicly feuded for quite some time, but did bury the hatchet to coexist as Ryder Cup teammates.
On the TNT broadcast, Charles Barkley, who was joined by Phil Mickelson on commentary, half-joked that he was glad The Match ended so swiftly, giving him the opportunity to jet off to the Iron Bowl to see his alma mater, Auburn, take on Alabama in football on Saturday.
The Match began as an exhibition on Black Friday in 2018, with a competition between Tiger Woods and Mickelson. Subsequent iterations of it have seen Tiger and Peyton Manning team up against Mickelson and Tom Brady, Mickelson and Charles Barkley compete against Manning and Stephen Curry and DeChambeau and Aaron Rodgers square off with Mickelson and Brady.
