As the Kevin Durant stalemate continues, what seems like half of the NBA has kicked the tires with the Brooklyn Nets' front office.
Yes, the Boston Celtics have still made the best offer for Durant, The Athletic reported on Monday morning. But that report included a dizzying list of teams that have made offers far less tantalizing than Jaylen Brown, Derrick White and a pick. In addition to the Raptors and Heat, the obvious candidates, the Sixers, Bucks, Hawks, Nuggets, Pelicans and Grizzlies have made (presumably lowball) offers for Durant, according to The Athletic.
That last team is by far the most interesting. A major reason the Durant trade request has dragged on for so long is that for the Nets to get anything remotely approaching fair value, the other team involved would have to essentially destroy the rest of its roster, leaving Durant nothing to play with when he arrives. The Grizzlies are one of the few teams in the league that has enough young depth and draft picks to make a credible offer for Durant and field a powerhouse team around him.
For now, it probably won't happen. The Athletic story goes on to say that Jaren Jackson Jr. and Desmond Bane are not available in a theoretical Durant trade. But as much of the rest of the Western Conference stagnates, the Grizzlies are at least looking into doing what it takes to dethrone the Warriors.
And while Durant likely won't be in Memphis next season, it is delightful to consider. The Warriors-Grizzlies rivalry, already characterized by chippy play, hurt feelings and extended trash talk, would go thermonuclear. The Grizzlies would no longer be the little brother; for Warriors fans, Durant would go from "cordial ex" to Public Enemy No. 1. It certainly would be more fun than his dreary Brooklyn tenure.
