The PGA Tour literally can’t keep up with Bryson DeChambeau.
During his three-shot victory at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, the 26-year-old found himself ranked dead-last in proximity to hole despite leading the field in driving distance and multiple strokes-gained. DeChambeau’s drives were so long that they were being counted as approach shots.
ShotLink considers all shots within 30 yards of the green an approach shot. As a result, a few of DeChambeau’s booming drives counted as approaches by ShotLink after they landed only a few club lengths away from the green, skewing his proximity to hole stats.
DeChambeau averaged 350.6 yards per tee shot on the two holes the PGA Tour used to officially measure driving distance. That mark shattered the ShotLink record, which has been used since 2003. Tiger Woods held the previous record of 341.5, which he accomplished at the 2005 British Open.
The bulked-up DeChambeau — he gained 20 pounds during the PGA’s three-month quarantine — has been the talk of golf since the sport returned. He’s finished in the top-10 in all four events, capped by his victory in Detroit, and added a bit of controversy after feuding with a cameraman on Saturday.
DeChambeau attempted drive some of the pars-4s, including the 399-yard 13th. On Sunday, he waited for the group in front of him to clear the green before hitting his drive.
“I couldn’t believe I had to do that today on 13. I really could have gotten there, I just pulled it unfortunately,” DeChambeau told reporters after his win. “I don’t do that very often. Hopefully I can have that going on a lot more down the road. That would be a lot of fun.”
DeChambeau had finished in the top-10 six times in a row, but his improved driving game offered him the winning formula last weekend.
“He’s changed the way the game is played entirely,” Kevin Kisner told CBS after the Rocket Mortgage Classic.
