Alabama was without two starters in its 41-24 win over Georgia this past weekend. Defensive end LaBryan Ray and tight end Carl Tucker both missed the game due to elbow and hamstring injuries, respectively, head coach Nick Saban revealed following the 17-point victory.
Their statuses for Saturday’s road game against the Tennessee Volunteers haven’t changed.
“They’re still questionable for the game,” Saban said after Wednesday’s practice.
In their absences, Christian Barmore started on the defensive line, while Kendall Randolph was the blocking tight end on Alabama’s first offensive snap against the Bulldogs.
Something else that hasn’t changed is the Tide’s COVID-19 situation. While other teams around the SEC have experienced outbreaks and even had to postpone games to later in the season, Alabama has fared much better, as Saban was asked if any positive tests -- other than his false positive last Wednesday -- have popped up at the Mal M. Moore Athletic Facility.
“We’ve only had one positive test, I think, in the last two or three weeks,” Saban said. “We haven’t had any issues, knock on wood. And hopefully, guys will continue to manage their personal space and do the right things so that we can minimize that as much as we can.”
Continuing the update theme, Saban was asked about UA’s punting, as well as the status of Ty Perine, who watched Saturday’s win over Georgia from the stands at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Perine punted in six games last year and averaged 44.69 yards per punt. This season, walk-on Sam Johnson has been the primary punter and is averaging 35.4 yards per punt.
“(Perine) wasn’t dressed for the game,” Saban said. “I don’t think the punting has been what we hoped it would be. I think we have good competition at the position. Ty is one of those guys. So, we’re evaluating them on a weekly basis. If we feel somebody else can do a better job for us, we’ll certainly put them in there. But they have to earn that, as well.”
Alabama (4-0) will travel to Knoxville, Tenn., to play Tennessee (2-2) on Saturday, Oct. 24, at Neyland Stadium. The game between the Tide and Vols will kick off at 2:30 p.m. CT on CBS.
