Notes on the votes
• Yup, I stuck with Gonzaga. I’ve been ranking the Zags ahead of Auburn all season, and I had them at No. 1 last week. There’s a good case to be made that Auburn should be No. 1, but I’m not sure what the argument is that Gonzaga should be demoted. The strongest point in favor of the change is that Gonzaga lost to Alabama in Seattle and Auburn beat the Tide in Tuscaloosa. Granted. I also acknowledge that the Tigers play in a far more difficult conference. Still, are we sure that Gonzaga wouldn’t have the same record in the SEC that Auburn does? Are we sure Gonzaga wouldn’t beat Kentucky at home the way Auburn did on Saturday? For that matter, are we sure Auburn would have beaten the Wildcats if TyTy Washington hadn’t gotten hurt? UK was winning by nine points when Washington left the game for good midway through the first half. We’ll never know the answer to those questions, of course, which is what makes this whole exercise so delightful.
