Global Demand for Vegetable Oils Could Reach 310 Million Tonnes in 2050: Study

Jakarta: Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Darmin Nasution has reiterated that oil palm is still the most efficient oil crop in the world.

"In order to produce 1 ton of palm oil, we only need 0.26 hectares of oil palms," Darmin said here on Friday.

The world has four major oil seed crops. They are oil palm, soybean, sunflower and canola.

"In order to produce 1 ton of sunflower oil, we need 1.43 hectares of sunflowers," Darmin added.

Darmin met with the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) palm oil task force this morning. He receieved the IUCN Report on Palm Oil and Biodiversity during the meeting.

"Amid challenges faced by palm oil producers, this study is a good step forward for the development of local palm oil industry," Darmin stated.

The study says that global demand for vegetable oils would grow to 310 million tonnes in 2050. It argues that banning palm oil could result in diminished efforts to produce palm oil sustainably.
