A new rumor chimes in on ProMotion arriving with the "iPhone 13" and Apple may not release new iPhone SE until 2022, but it will arrive with 5G support, a dual-camera setup, and a larger display when it does.
According to display expert Ross Young, Apple won't release a new iPhone SE model in the spring of 2021. Instead, a successor to the low-cost iPhone arrives in the spring of 2022.
Those waiting for the update may be rewarded with several new technologies. Young says the new iPhone SE model will sport 5G support, a 6.06-inch display, and a dual-lens camera setup. It will reportedly retain a Touch ID sensor, though there aren't any details on fingerprint sensor location or bezel size.
As far as predictions for 2021, Young says that the "iPhone 13" models will sport 120Hz ProMotion displays with variable refresh rates, made possible through adoption of low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) backplanes.
The "iPhone 13" devices may also feature integrated touch display technology. That means a touch sensor patterned over the OLED panels, rather than a laminated layer. He says that will reduce panel thickness and could be lower-cost, "depending on yield."
The display analyst also said that the "iPhone 13 mini" and "iPhone 13" models would adopt the camera sensors and sensor size of the "iPhone 12 Pro Max." Camera sensor size will also bumped up on the two Pro models, says Young.
Additionally, China-based display maker BOE will join LG Display as one of the primary suppliers of panels for both 6.1-inch models, Young added.
Young, founder of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) made the claims about the devices, citing supply chain sources. Young also cited information Tokyo-based Mizuho Securities to corroborate predictions from DSCC.
Rumors — including from accurate leaker Jon Prosser — have suggested that the "iPhone 12" lineup will sport 120Hz displays. However, more recent reports suggest that the "iPhone 12" won't sport a variable display refresh rate.
Young has consistently bucked the idea of 120Hz displays on the "iPhone 12." He claimed that iPhones would require LTPO to make a ProMotion display possible, despite the fact that there are devices with 120Hz refresh rates but not LTPO.
